Summer is coming and the long break between school, though eagerly anticipated by students, can result in the “summer slide”. Reading during the summer break helps maintain and improve reading skills, but failing to practice could put the child behind peers come school time.
Here are 5 top summer reading programs designed to keep your child happy, while encouraging good reading habits.
Fast ForWord Program
The Fast ForWord Program at Roig Academy is a science-based summer reading program. Neuroscience principles, the Orton-Gillingham program, and unique Roig approach are used to develop and strengthen the memory, and reading skills of students.
The 7-week program is tailored to the needs of each student. Instruction focuses on improving critical language, reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Reading Explorers
The Children’s Trust funds the Reading Explorers program. It has helped over 6000 children in the Miami-Dade area, improve reading and comprehension skills. Children’s reading skills have improved up to 50% after doing the program.
The summer reading explorers program (SREP) is for kindergarten, first and second graders. Certified teachers provide small group tutoring sessions tailored to each students ability.
Reading Skills
The University of South Florida runs Reading Skills, a summer reading program available in various locations. The program is designed for children in grades K-5 to improve their reading and comprehension skills.
The Institute of Reading Development teaches grade-specific classes for each grade. Each child gets relevant support and learns the skill they need. Students in grades 6-12 can also join speed reading and study skills programs.
Summer Reading
Learning Ally provides a summer reading program for all its students in grades K-12. The program encourages students with print disabilities, including dyslexia, blindness, and visual impairment to practice reading with audiobooks.
The program awards monthly and overall prizes for reading activity. This program helps students with print disabilities to feel more confident reading.
Let’s Build a Better World Together
The Miami-Dade Public Library System hosted the Let’s Build a Better World Together, a summer reading program contest, in 2017. It encourages children, teens, and adults to read.
Prize entry tickets are awarded for each hour spent reading or listening to a book. The contest ran in 2017 with various prizes awarded to top readers. Downloadable reading list examples are available on their website.
